In a decisive move aimed at enhancing accountability within his administration, Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has announced a one-month suspension for three of his commissioners due to absenteeism. This action underscores the governor's commitment to ensuring that public servants are dedicated to their roles and actively participate in governance.
The suspended commissioners include:
-Solomon Azi- Grants and Donor Agencies
-Victor Chukwu- Environment
-Ikeuwa Omebe - Ministry of Rural Development
According to Jude Okpor, the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, the suspensions were enacted after the commissioners failed to attend a crucial State Executive Council meeting on Monday without prior permission. Mr. Okpor emphasized that Governor Nwifuru is taking a firm stance on absenteeism and a lack of commitment among public officials, signaling that neglecting their duties will not be tolerated.
In addition to being suspended, the affected commissioners will also be stripped of all privileges associated with their positions for the duration of their suspension. This measure reflects the governor’s determination to uphold the integrity of his administration and enforce a culture of responsibility.
During the Executive Council meeting, Governor Nwifuru also addressed contractors involved in government projects, urging them to accelerate their work and adhere to contractual agreements. He warned that the state would not hesitate to use legal means to ensure compliance, a message that reinforces the administration's commitment to transparency and efficiency.
In positive developments, Okpor highlighted that the Council has approved several initiatives to improve infrastructure at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Afikpo, including the construction of staff quarters, a female hostel, and a health clinic. These projects align with the Renewed Hope initiative of President Bola Tinubu's administration, aimed at creating a better environment for both staff and corps members.
Further, the Council has allocated N40 million for the Ministry of Water Resources to build a central water store, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the ministry's equipment and resources.
In recognizing academic excellence, the Council also honored the Ebonyi State University (EBSU) Faculty of Law team, who represented Nigeria in the 33rd Christof Heyns African Moot Court Competition in Kigali, Rwanda. The team, comprising Michael Agu-Ebeke, Ibor Cynthia Nwamaka, and their guardian, Dr. (Mrs.) Chioma Vivian Iteshi, triumphed over 68 Anglophone and 15 Francophone teams, making history as the first Nigerian law faculty to achieve such a feat in 33 years. Each member was awarded a five million naira (N5 million) reward in recognition of their outstanding achievement.
In closing, Governor Nwifuru called on leaders of the university and other tertiary institutions in the state to focus on practical-based research that produces solution-oriented graduates, ensuring that education keeps pace with the evolving demands of society.
