In a developing story from Kogi State, the police have urged Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to cancel her forthcoming Sallah rally in the Central Senatorial District. This request stems from a statement released by the State Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, highlighting concerns over potential security threats.
According to the statement, signed by Police Public Relations Officer ASP William Aya, the Commissioner referenced a recent proclamation by the Kogi State government that imposes a ban on all political gatherings. This ban was put in place on Monday, primarily due to reports indicating possible security risks during such events.
The police emphasized the importance of maintaining peace within the state, stating: “Following an intelligence report on security threats in Kogi State and the subsequent ban on all forms of rally and procession by the Kogi State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, Kogi State Police Command has called on the organizers of the planned rally at Okene to cancel the event in the interest of peace.”
The statement further detailed that intelligence suggests certain individuals may attempt to exploit the rally as a cover for unrest, which could disturb the currently stable environment in Kogi. In light of this, the police stance is clear: they will not hesitate to enforce the law and address any actions that may threaten public safety.
Despite the police's warning, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has expressed her determination to proceed with her “homecoming” event. She has framed this rally as a chance to celebrate Eid Fitr with her constituents, asserting that her intentions are rooted in community and togetherness.
