In a heartfelt response to the tragic lynching of 16 hunters, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has demanded that the suspected perpetrators be publicly paraded. He also called for compensation for the grieving families affected by this horrific act.
Governor Yusuf made these statements during a condolence visit from his Edo State counterpart, Governor Monday Okpebholo, on March 31. This visit came just two days after the hunters were laid to rest in their hometown of Uromi, Edo State. The community mourned collectively at the cemetery as they honored the lives of those who were unjustly killed after being mistakenly accused of kidnapping.
The hunters, traveling in a truck, fell victim to a group of vigilantes who violently intercepted them, resulting in the tragic deaths of 16 men, while 10 others managed to escape. Speaking at the Kano Government House, Governor Yusuf expressed his deep concern over this attack, emphasizing Nigeria's commitment to the sanctity of human life. He stated, “This cowardly act directly contradicts the fundamental principles of our society, which are grounded in both Islamic and Christian teachings."
As of now, authorities have arrested 14 individuals connected to the killings. Governor Yusuf reassured the community that Kano prioritizes protection and brotherhood, stressing that they would remain vigilant against such violence. Addressing fears of potential reprisals, he noted, “We have implemented strong security measures to prevent any retaliatory attacks. It is crucial that those arrested are paraded publicly to provide some measure of relief to the victims’ families and ensure accountability.”
The governor also appealed to Governor Okpebholo to ensure that the victims' families receive appropriate compensation for their devastating loss. He commended President Tinubu for his swift action, highlighting the directive to security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.
In his remarks, Governor Okpebholo condemned the brutal killings of the hunters in Uromi, labeling the act as "barbaric" and "unacceptable." Upon his arrival, he expressed his sorrow and acknowledged the support he received from the Hausa community during his electoral campaign.
Furthermore, he indicated that President Tinubu had tasked the Inspector-General of Police and other security forces with pursuing the culprits diligently to ensure they face justice. “We have established robust security measures to hold all involved accountable. Investigations are already underway,” he confirmed.
