In a notable display of support, the Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum and Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has praised President Bola Tinubu for his decisive actions to address the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State.
Speaking to reporters at the Government House in Owerri on Thursday, Uzodimma underscored the escalating situation in Rivers as a national security concern. He commended the president's decision to impose emergency rule in the state, emphasizing that “prevention is better than cure” in such critical circumstances.
Uzodimma illuminated the potential dangers of inaction, warning that failure to intervene could have led to increased violence and instability. “We have all witnessed the rising tensions, particularly with the threat of impeachment directed at the governor, compounded by certain political players refusing to heed sensible advice,” he remarked. “Given Rivers’ pivotal role in our nation's economy and security, the situation had escalated to a point where it was impossible to ignore.”
The governor painted a stark picture of the consequences had the impeachment process continued unchecked, likening it to a dangerous chain reaction that could have sparked widespread chaos. "We cannot overlook the series of violent incidents, such as pipeline bombings, that have occurred while we are actively seeking to boost crude oil production and stabilize our economy,” he added. “Had the impeachment gone forth, the resulting actions could have been catastrophic.”
Uzodimma did not shy away from appealing to all parties involved in the conflict, urging them to show restraint and remorse. He called for wisdom to prevail, paving the way for a sustainable resolution to the crisis.
In addition to commending the president’s efforts, he lauded the National Assembly for backing Tinubu’s directive, noting that the decision aligns with the larger national interest. He placed his faith in the Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.), praising him as a “seasoned expert” who is capable of working within the law to restore calm in Rivers.
Uzodimma reiterated the commitment of the Progressives Governors’ Forum to support President Tinubu in his endeavors to promote peace and security across the nation.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes remain on Rivers State, anticipating the restorative measures that will follow in the wake of this political upheaval.
