In a recent visit to the University of Abuja (UniAbuja), the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, voiced significant concerns regarding the extensive undeveloped land acquired by the institution. His comments came during an inspection of various construction projects, including a crucial 15km road leading to Wassa in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and access roads to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Academy.
Wike's frustration over the situation was palpable as he described the large swathes of land held by the university as "unacceptable." He pointedly questioned, "Where will a university go and take over 1,000 hectares of land for what purpose?" His message was clear: acquiring land is one thing, but development is essential. "We have been to universities, and just the grabbing of land is not the whole thing; it is just for development purposes," he emphasized.
Highlighting the connection between infrastructure and development, Wike remarked on the potential for growth along the newly constructed roads. "Because of this road now, we may see that it attracts people to come and develop their properties. So we are happy with what we are seeing," he stated. However, he expressed skepticism about UniAbuja’s long-term plans for the land, cautioning that without adequate development, the university might end up leasing the land rather than utilizing it for educational purposes. "What future? Before you know it, they will begin to lease it out to people. It does not make sense," he asserted.
Wike's critique extended to the broader philosophy surrounding land acquisition without corresponding development. "You can have 20,000 hectares of land, but if the university does not have any infrastructure, what does it help? We must stop this idea of just acquiring land for acquisition's sake. That is not the essence of it." He reinforced that if land is given to an institution, it should be developed; otherwise, the government would reclaim it for others eager to invest in development.
Looking ahead, Wike indicated plans to engage with the FCT Director of Lands to address the lack of development on UniAbuja’s acquired land. He noted the importance of accountability and invited both representatives from the university and law enforcement to participate in the discussion.
While discussing ongoing construction projects, Wike expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far, stating, "We believe to the glory of God that Mr. President will also be happy when he comes to inaugurate these projects. It is part of what we want to see that promises made are promises fulfilled."
Emphasizing the administration's dedication to project completion, Wike declared, “It is not good to just award contracts and then abandon them. This administration, Mr. President does not believe in that. Any contract given must be completed for people to use." He concluded by commending the contractors for their quality work, reinforcing a commitment to tangible results that benefit the community.
