In a show of diplomatic solidarity, Vice President Kashim Shettima has left Abuja for Dakar, Senegal, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the celebrations marking Senegal’s 65th Independence Day on Friday. This significant occasion highlights Senegal’s liberation from French colonial rule in 1960 and is celebrated annually on April 4 with a vibrant display of national pride through ceremonies, parades, and cultural events.
Shettima's attendance underscores the strong and enduring relationship between Nigeria and Senegal, a bond firmly acknowledged by President Tinubu in response to an invitation from Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
As the Vice President participates in the festivities at the Place de la Nation in Dakar, he will be joined by other distinguished guests from across Africa and beyond. The event promises to be a showcase of Senegal’s rich heritage and achievements since gaining independence.
Meanwhile, President Tinubu is currently on a short working visit to Paris, France, where he is expected to review his administration’s midterm performance and assess key milestones. He will return to Nigeria in about two weeks.
Vice President Shettima is anticipated to return to Nigeria shortly after the celebrations, bringing back not only memories of this historic event but also reinforcing Nigeria's commitment to fostering strong ties with its West African neighbor.
