Governor Mbah Urges Nursing Students to Stay and Build Enugu’s Healthcare

 

In a heartfelt appeal to the next generation of healthcare professionals, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has called on nursing students not to leave the state after graduation. This plea comes amid the growing trend of healthcare professionals seeking opportunities abroad, often referred to as the “japa syndrome.” 

During the 2024/2025 Maiden Matriculation Ceremony at the Nursing College in Enugu on April 10, the governor emphasized the significant resources the state invests in training nursing and midwifery students. He encouraged graduates to think about the impact of their decision on the state’s healthcare system. 

Governor Mbah, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, stated, “We don’t train you only for you to leave our healthcare facilities after we’ve invested so much in your education and infrastructure. We hope that you will consider giving back to the state after you graduate.”

He highlighted that improving the working conditions for healthcare professionals is a top priority for the government. “One of our main goals is to enhance service conditions so that when you earn your certificate, you choose to remain in Enugu,” he said. 

The governor reassured the students that their training goes beyond academics; it is about fostering a sense of service to the community. He pointed out that in the 2024 and 2025 budgets, the highest investments are being directed towards education and healthcare, illustrating the government’s commitment to building a robust healthcare system in Enugu State.
