President Bola Tinubu on Sunday lauded the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for his outstanding performance, expressing optimism that such achievements will lead to a victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) rather than the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to which Wike still officially belongs, in the upcoming 2027 FCT elections.
Tinubu made these remarks at the Presidential Villa in Abuja during a traditional Sallah visit led by Wike, accompanied by a delegation of distinguished FCT residents that included clergy, judicial officers, mandate secretaries, area council chairmen, political office holders, royal leaders, and heads of security agencies, to celebrate the conclusion of Ramadan and the Eid-el-Fitr holiday.
During his address, President Tinubu referred to the FCT Minister as "Mr. Infrastructure," highlighting various initiatives and projects implemented under Wike's leadership that have improved the lives of Abuja residents, for which he expressed his gratitude.
Recognizing the diverse group present, Tinubu stated, "I appreciate the array of individuals here today. I must commend the Honourable Minister of FCT. It is, indeed, a privilege to serve as the landlord of everyone in the Federal Capital Territory.”
He went on to acknowledge Wike’s innovative ideas that have helped to modernize the bureaucracy and foster progressive thinking within the administration, creating opportunities that may have otherwise been impeded.
“The independent Civil Service Commission initiative and other measures we discussed have allowed for greater upward mobility and promotions aligned with the civil service and area councils' frameworks, even amidst limited resources,” Tinubu noted.
Recalling a conversation with Wike, he shared, “I remember when Nyesom Wike approached me and said, ‘Please, assist us in resolving the challenges posed by the Treasury Single Account (TSA), so I can accomplish more.’ I asked him to outline his plans, teasingly inquiring whether this would help the APC win more favor in the FCT. I pointed out that while his party (PDP) might benefit, he could risk his position with substantial gains.”
Wike responded affirmatively, and as a result, significant progress began to materialize. “I watched as we worked towards revitalizing rural areas, completing neglected projects, and breathing new life into the Vice President's residence that had been dormant for years. Health centers are being rehabilitated, healthcare facilities for FCT residents are being upgraded, and schools are receiving renovations. Thank you, Wike,” the president concluded.
