As a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), I look back with fondness on the collaborative spirit that drove the merger of political parties to establish our beloved APC. Since 2013, I had hoped that my values would be in sync with those of the APC until I decided to retire from active politics.
However, the developments in the last two years have made it painfully clear that the current leadership of the APC shows little inclination to acknowledge, let alone address, the troubling state of our party. Despite my efforts to voice my concerns, both privately and publicly, it has become evident that the trajectory of the APC is capricious, moving further from the ideals that inspired its founding.
I have made the difficult but necessary decision to seek another political platform that aligns with the progressive values I hold dear. Founders often develop an emotional attachment to the institutions they helped create, yet pragmatism dictates that we must recognize when a divergence has become insurmountable. I have served the APC with dedication, contributing to its viability as a political entity, but I can no longer reconcile my beliefs with the current direction of the party.
As a loyal party member, I played a role in securing the APC's electoral victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023. My two terms as governor of Kaduna State were devoted to advancing progressive policies that fostered human development in education and healthcare, expanded infrastructure, promoted equality of opportunity, created jobs, and attracted investments. Sadly, these achievements seem to hold little weight in an APC that has lost sight of its original vision and increasingly marginalized its membership over the last two years. This situation is simply unacceptable to me.
Today, I am announcing my resignation from the APC, effective immediately, as I submit my formal letter to my ward in Kaduna. After thorough consultations with my mentors, colleagues, and loyal supporters, I have decided to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as the new platform for my political endeavors.
Moving forward, my focus as a member of the SDP will be not only on strengthening our party but also on engaging with other opposition leaders to form a united front against the APC in upcoming elections and bye-elections leading up to 2027. I invite all our supporters and anyone concerned about the future of our nation to join us in this journey. Together, we can work towards making Nigeria a flourish beacon of hope and pride for Africans and the Black race.
