Atiku Abubakar Champions Support for NYSC Corps Member Critical of Tinubu's Administration
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has hailed Ushie Uguamaye, a Lagos-based National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, as a symbol of a new generation of politically engaged women dedicated to advocacy and democratic participation. This endorsement came after Uguamaye, known as Raye, faced threats following her viral TikTok video that criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In her video, which gained traction over the weekend on her TikTok account #talktoraye, Raye voiced her frustration over Nigeria's socio-economic challenges, labeling Tinubu a “terrible leader” and questioning the government's commitment to alleviating the struggles faced by citizens. Shortly after the video’s release, she reported that NYSC officials directed her to remove it, claiming she was receiving threats to her safety.
Atiku, in a statement released on his X handle, commended Raye for her courage, stating, “Raye embodies the spirit of a new generation of women who champion the ideals of popular participation and unwavering advocacy in the political sphere. I deeply admire her boldness and her fearless resolve to speak truth to power, undeterred by the weight of opposition.”
He likened Raye's activism to that of historic female figures who significantly impacted Nigeria's political landscape, including Gambo Sawaba, Funmilayo Ransom-Kuti, and Margaret Ekpo. Atiku urged the public to rally around Raye, asserting, “Rather than being met with hostility, Raye deserves encouragement and support. She is a shining emblem of the Nigerian youth—a testament to the long-held promise that the leaders of tomorrow are already among us, ready to shape a better future.”
