The Nigerian Senate has urged the immediate deployment of additional military personnel and cutting-edge equipment to Borno and Yobe states in response to the recent surge in deadly Boko Haram attacks in the North-East region.
This resolution follows a series of brutal assaults, including the killing of over a dozen soldiers in Marte (Monguno LGA) on May 12, and a subsequent attack on Gajiram (Nganzai LGA headquarters) the next day, which has left communities in fear and uncertainty.
Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno emphasized the need for a robust response, acknowledging the military's past successes in reclaiming territories from the insurgents while highlighting the evolving nature of the threat, including the use of drones and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) that have resulted in significant casualties and disrupted civilian life.
Key Demands:
- Immediate deployment of well-equipped troops with advanced technological support to the affected regions.
- Senate Committees on Army and Air Force to oversee the implementation of the resolution and ensure compliance.
Governor Zulum's Condemnation
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum strongly denounced the recent attacks in Chibok, Gwoza, Kala Balge, Marte, and the tragic IED blast on the Maiduguri-Damboa Road, which claimed the lives of two education workers on their way to exam.
In a statement, Governor Zulum expressed his solidarity with the families of the victims, including soldiers, civilians, and educators, and pledged to work closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to bring an end to the insurgency.
"These heinous acts of terror will not deter us. We will not rest until we overcome this menace and ensure peace and stability for our people," Governor Zulum declared.
