On Wednesday, the Kano community gathered to pay their final respects to the late Abbas Sanusi, a revered senior councilor and the oldest kingmaker in the Kano emirate. He was laid to rest at the Gandu Albasa quarters’ cemetery, surrounded by a sea of sympathizers who came to honor his remarkable life and contributions.
Before the burial, a heartfelt funeral prayer was held at the Emir's palace, attended by prominent dignitaries including the Emir of Kano, Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II; the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf; and Deputy Senate President Sen. Barau Jibrin. Together, they joined hundreds of mourners to commemorate the legacy of the late Galadima Kano.
The solemn prayers were led by the Chief Imam of Kano, Professor Sani Zahradeen, who was joined by other notable figures in the community, emphasizing the deep respect and admiration felt for Sanusi.
Abbas Sanusi, who passed away at the age of 91 after a prolonged illness, was not only a distinguished traditional title holder in the Kano emirate but also a father figure to many. He was the father of Prince Abdullahi Abbas Sanusi, the current Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano.
Throughout his life, Sanusi played a significant role in the emirate, serving as Wamban Kano and senior councilor under the late Emir Alhaji Ado Bayero, who reigned from 1963 until his passing in 2020. His contributions to the community were invaluable, and he is survived by his wives and an impressive lineage of 35 children, who carry on his legacy.
The outpouring of support from the community during this time of sorrow is a testament to the impact that Abbas Sanusi had on the lives of those around him. His dedication to his family and the Kano emirate will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
