In a devastating wave of violence that has shaken the community of Uzo-Uwani in Enugu State, armed insurgents suspected to be herdsmen have launched a brutal attack, resulting in at least 25 fatalities and numerous injuries. The Horror has driven countless families to seek refuge in neighboring states, including Anambra and Kogi, leaving the region enveloped in fear and uncertainty.
Local vigilante groups and community leaders have aired their frustration over the slow response from security forces. Godwin Ezugwu, a member of a local vigilante organization, recounted the horror of the events and criticized the delayed reaction from the authorities, particularly following the recent assurances of safety from newly appointed police chief Mamman Bitrus Giwa. Among the many atrocities reported were the merciless machete execution of vigilante Chijioke Anioke at Ekenwaozege junction, the cold-blooded murder of Nwa Black in Opanda, Adani, and the chilling kidnapping of ENTRACO driver Patty Ozor that resulted in a fatal shooting.
Amid rising tension, community leaders are urgently calling on Governor Peter Mbah to take decisive action, expressing dismay over the inaction of local authorities, including the controversial Chijioke Ezugwu, a former vigilante leader now facing scrutiny. With an alarming increase in incidents of abductions and killings in recent months, opinion leaders and senior security officials, including DSS Director General Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, have warned that “Fulanis have declared war on Nigerians, particularly in Southern Nigeria,” urging communities to arm themselves for self-defense.
