The President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and associates of Nigerian football legend Christian Chukwu, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 74, leaving a significant void in the hearts of football fans across the nation.
In a statement released by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu joined the football community in mourning the loss of a true icon whose contributions to the sport elevated Nigeria's standing on the international stage.
Christian Chukwu was a towering presence in Nigerian football, renowned for his leadership as captain of the Green Eagles during their historic victory in the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations. He later transitioned into coaching, where he steered the Super Eagles to a bronze medal finish in the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations.
Affectionately known as "Chairman," due to his commanding on-field presence, Chukwu dedicated his club career to Enugu Rangers. During his time there, he secured multiple national titles and led the team to continental success with the 1977 African Cup Winners’ Cup triumph.
President Tinubu lauded Chukwu for his trailblazing career, emphasizing his passion, discipline, and unwavering commitment to national pride.
"Christian Chukwu was more than a footballer and coach; he was a symbol of excellence and patriotism. He brought joy to millions, mentored a generation of footballers, and embodied the spirit of Nigerian sportsmanship both on and off the pitch," the President stated.
