The peaceful village of Umudioka in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State was shaken by the tragic news of the brutal murder of one of its most respected elders, Ichie Michael Nwobu on March 10. At the age of 84, Nwobu was not just a community leader; he was a symbol of wisdom and tradition for the residents.
According to reports from The Punch, Nwobu’s lifeless body was discovered in his bedroom after a Sunday church service. Family members, hoping to greet him after their spiritual gathering, instead found him lying on the floor in a pool of blood, allegedly the victim of a violent attack that left his neck and chest wounded from what appeared to be stab wounds. The shock and grief in the community were palpable as news spread of this horrifying event.
The response from the youth of Umudioka was immediate and intense. Angered and distraught, they began to mobilize in reaction to the brutal crime, but thankfully, elders of the community stepped in to restore calm before violence could erupt. This incident marks a heart-wrenching first for Umudioka, as community elder Chief Joseph Nweke expressed his dismay over such an abominable act occurring in their historically peaceful village. He condemned the attack as a violation of the moral fabric that binds their community together.
In interviews, Chief Nweke described the sheer horror of witnessing the aftermath of such violence on someone respected and beloved. “This is a despicable act, and the people responsible have committed an abomination of the highest order,” he remarked, highlighting the need for justice in the face of such tragic circumstances.
As of now, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochuckwu Ikenga, has not released an official statement regarding the investigation into Nwobu's murder. In a response to the tragic news, he indicated that he was unaware of the case but assured the public that he would follow up with the State Criminal Investigations Department to ascertain any reported details.
