The House of Representatives took a significant step on Wednesday by advancing a bill aimed at creating Orlu State from the existing Imo State. The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere, who represents the Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency, seeks to amend the provisions of the 1999 Constitution to establish Orlu as a new state.
The proposed state would encompass portions of Imo, Abia, and Anambra States, with Orlu designated as the capital. The bill aims to add a new paragraph to the Constitution that includes 28 local government areas, specifically: Orlu, Orsu, Oru West, Oru East, Ideato North, Ideato South, Njaba, Nkwerre, Nwangele, Isu, Oguta, Ohaji Egbema, Onuimo, and Ihiala.
Additionally, the list of local government areas to be included features Uga, Ihiala, Uli, Ozubulu, Akokwa, Arondizuogu, Umuchu, Umunze, Umuaku, New Ideato North, Nwabosi West, Nwabosi East, Owerre Nkworji, Alaoma, Amaifeke, and Owerrebiri Umuowa.
The proposal received backing from 33 fellow lawmakers during its presentation for the second reading, led by House Leader Hon. Julius Ihonvbere. When the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, called for a voice vote, the legislation received widespread support, successfully passing beyond the second reading stage.
