His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, CON, joined an impressive assembly of distinguished Igbo leaders and prominent Nigerians to pay their final respects to the late Prof. Humphrey Nwobu Nwosu in Orumba North Local Government Area, Anambra State.
Prof. Nwosu, a revered figure in Nigerian history, served as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and is best remembered for overseeing the landmark June 12, 1993, presidential election, which remains one of the most credible and momentous electoral exercises in the nation’s history. He was laid to rest in his hometown of Ajalli, Orumba North LGA, surrounded by love and remembrance.
The funeral service, hosted at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Ajalli, witnessed an outpouring of tributes from a multitude of notable personalities. The gathering included former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and former Governor of Imo State, H.E. Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha; the 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate and former Governor of Anambra State, H.E. Mr. Peter Obi; Governor of Anambra State, H.E. Prof. Charles Soludo; Governor of Abia State, H.E. Dr. Alex Otti; Minister of Works and former Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. Dave Umahi; Chief Emmanuel Okewulonu (Ikeoha); Nze Charles Onwunali; as well as numerous other leaders and dignitaries from across the nation.
The atmosphere was marked by profound sorrow yet resonated with celebratory reflections on Prof. Nwosu’s legacy. In their speeches, various leaders highlighted his pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s electoral landscape and the unwavering commitment he demonstrated toward fostering democratic governance.
